The origins of Freemasonry date to the 13th century as a guild of stonemasons and many prominent figures in history have been members. Today, this fraternal order functions as a social and philanthropic organization that prides itself on integrity in helping members and local communities. Many symbols have become recognizable expressions of the Masons.
This particular piece was commissioned for the most senior officer of a Masonic lodge. It is hand engraved - "Herbert J. Reeves W.M.(Worshipful Master)1916 Presented by Center Lodge No. 97 Meriden, Conn”. It displays the traditional Square- a critical tool for builders and a lesson in morality. The Compasses - for perfect geometry and architectural planning symbolizing restraint and a balanced life. The letter “G” - common in American Freemasonry, is thought to represent Geometry or (under) God, the “Grand Architect of the Universe, although many believe its true meaning to be unresolved. The Sun - illustrating the passing of time and illumination of the world.
